How to write a thesis statement

This guide walks through writing a thesis statement the way I'd explain it to a student sitting across from me — no filler, no padding to hit a word count.

Start with what the assessor is actually rewarding: precise textual evidence, a controlled argument, and language that sounds like you, not a thesaurus. Everything below builds toward that.

Work through each section in order the first time. After that, come back to whichever part you're weakest on — that's what the practice prompts at the bottom are for.

A lot of students lose marks not because they don't understand the text, but because their argument drifts halfway through a paragraph. Keep asking yourself: does this sentence prove my topic sentence, or just describe the plot?

By the end of this guide you should be able to write a plan for this text in under five minutes, from memory, under exam conditions.

A thesis isn't a summary of the text. It's an argument someone could disagree with — that's what makes it markable.
